Honors Chemistry

HONORS CHEMISTRY   The Course   Honors Chemistry is a course that has been designed for the student who is considering a career in the sciences and has shown a high aptitude for math.  This course is an in-depth study of matter, atomic structure, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, energy, and the periodic table. It covers more material at a greater depth and faster pace than the normal Regents chemistry class. Students must have a true understanding of the concepts if they are to solve problems successfully both in chemistry and beyond. Memorizing facts and procedures set forth in sample problems is no substitute for understanding the underlying concepts.  As a result, students need to realize that they will be committing themselves to more challenging problems mathematically, more detailed laboratory investigations and greater expectations, in regard to the quality of work submitted.   Grading Policies   Marking period grades will be comprised of 75% test scores and 25% lab grades.  Tests will occur at the conclusion of every chapter (roughly every two weeks) and will consist of primarily Regents type questions.  Additional questions will be added where and when the curriculums differ.   Although homework does not count towards a student's grade, it is assigned on a regular basis.  Success in class requires that students devote time outside of class to further their understanding of the topics covered and completion of the homework is highly recommended. Answer keys to homework assignments, as well as practice tests for every chapter are posted online so that students may immediately assess the accuracy of their work as soon as the assignment is finished.
