Course Description      This course is designed to expose students to close readings in fiction, nonfiction and poetry, which deal with man’s conflict with the world around him, as well as the inevitable conflict that develops within the self.

Materials Needed        Students need to bring with them each day the current text or texts, a blue or black ink pen, loose-leaf paper, and a spiral or composition notebook.

Grading Policy            Students are encouraged to meet with me before or after school if they are interested in their progress.

            Short responses are scored accordingly:

            ++ (100% credit), + (90%), (80%), - (70%), or X (1/2 credit)

The overall course grade calculation scheme is per student handbook:

 Each Quarter:                                                                                                  1/3

Final Portfolio (See Reverse):                                                                            1/3

Conduct Code- Be present, be punctual, be prepared, be polite, be productive, be positive.

I try to keep the number of assigned pages to an average of 20 pages per night.  Some nights you will have more, some less.  Quizzes are always open-note; you may use any hand-written notes (no Spark-Notes!).  I encourage you to take copious notes as you read.  Many of the selections will be accompanied by study questions to aid you in taking notes, and you may use these as well during the quizzes.
