(Click on title for course outline and additional information):Materials Needed for Elective Courses: Students need to bring with them each day the current text or texts, a blue or black ink pen, loose-leaf paper, and a spiral or composition notebook. Grading Policy Students are encouraged to meet with me before or after school if they are interested in their progress. Late assignments will not be accepted without a valid excuse!Conflicts in Nature and Society (Schedule): This course is designed to expose students to close readings in fiction and nonfiction, which deal with man's conflict with the world around him, as well as the ensuing conflict that develops within the self. Weekly quizzes and quarterly essays are the basis for assessment. A Portfolio is required in lieu of a final exam. Portfolio Requirements

Short Stories: This course is designed to expose students to close readings in the original American literary form: the short story. We will begin with Edgar Allen Poe, noted by many as the founding father of the form, proceed through the various periods (Romanticism, Realism, etc.) to the modern day genres such as detective, horror and ghost stories, and science fiction. We will also explore the global impact of this literary form by reading selections from world literature. Weekly quizzes and quarterly essays are the basis for assessment. A final exam will consist of objective questions, essay prompts, and a project ( click here for details ).Quarter assignments are weighted accordingly:

- Quizzes(weekly): 40%
- Responses (daily) : 15%
- Essays (one per quarter): 30%

Film Appreciation: This course is designed to train students in visual language, i.e., the language that is filmmaking. Students will view a variety of films, American and foreign, from a variety of genres: comedy, drama, surrealism, war and western. A student's grade is based solely upon written responses to film, both prompted and unprompted. Parental consent to possible objectionable film content is required by the end of the first week of the term. Click here for consent form.

Overall Electives Course Grade is as follows:
- Each Quarter (2 in a half-year elective) 1/3
