Course Description This course is designed to assist students in meeting the statewide standards for language arts: students will read, write, listen and speak for the purposes of understanding and responding to information from texts, analyzing and evaluating literature, and communicating effectively.
Topics covered include: literary genres (novel, short story, poetry, drama, nonfiction); literary elements and devices; note-taking skills; vocabulary; essay writing and revision.
Materials Needed Students need to bring with them each day the current text or texts, a blue or black ink pen, and a three-ring binder divided into four sections: literature notes, literary terminology, vocabulary and grammar . The notebook will be checked periodically for neatness.
Grading Policy Students are encouraged to meet with me before or after school if they are interested in their progress. Late work for English 10 students will be penalized by 10% per day!!!Assignments are weighted accordingly:
- Essays/compositions: 40%
- Exams/Projects 30%
- Quizzes/Notebook Check 20%
- Short Responses/ homework 10%
The grading scale for the course is according to school policy:
- 4 Quarters 70% (17.5% each X 4)
- Midterm (cumulative literature and vocabulary, and reading comprehension) 10%
- Final Exam (skills-based reading comprehension and writing) 20%
