Character Profile Project

Project Overview-

Students will be organized into groups of three or four, and each group will be assigned one of the characters in LotF.  Each group will explore the character in detail, and in doing so will also be exploring other facets of the novel.  Groups will be researching outside the novel as well*.  The project will culminate in a finished product in the form of a visual presentation (a poster), which will be presented via discussion to the whole class.

The poster must contain/depict the following items:

  • The character’s name prominently displayed

  • A brief (bulleted) description of the character (physical description, traits, role, etc.)  Artists in the group can replace this list with an original sketch of the character.

  • A significant quote by or about the character

  • Depiction of a closely related symbol (e.g. for Ralph, the conch; for Piggy, his glasses)

  • A quote from a prominent thinker reflecting the character’s worldview

  • An image, symbol, quote, or factoid connecting this character from Lord of the Flies to an aspect or concept in EACH of the following context areas:

its historical context (1930s-1960s preferably, but anytime in 20th century is ok),

its geopolitical context (referring to political ideologies and systems),

its sociological context, (referring to how individuals interact in a group setting), and

its psychological context (referring to behavior and the workings of the mind).
