Learning about the American Flag in Second Grade.

Mrs. Jones' 2nd graders have spent some time learning about the American Flag. Students learned that the flag has symbols on it that represent something else (50 states and the original 13 colonies) and that the flag itself is a National Symbol. They also learned how an American Flag is made, how the stripes and blue square (that is always in the left corner) are dyed to get the deep rich colors. The stripes and squares are then sent to a factory to be sewn together and then have the stars placed on them.

Many students were surprised that there are people who would hand sew American Flags. One thing students found most interesting is that the flag always starts and ends with a red stripe.

Today, we took a walk around the school to see how many flags we could find! We stopped at each one and discussed all the interesting facts we have learned. We found four American Flags at our school. One at each building and one at the football field.
