Experimenting with Duck Calls and Water Glasses
Sound, Volume, Pitch, and Vibration Experiments
This week Mrs. Jones’s second grade has been learning all about sound, volume, pitch, and vibration! Tuesday, they did a pitch experiment with glasses and filled each one with a different amount of water and left one empty. The students then made predictions on which glass would have the lowest pitch. We took turns tapping the glasses with a metal spoon to listen to the different pitch sounds. The students were able to see the vibration once the glass was tapped, the ripples in the water, and hear how the pitch on each glass got higher as the water level was less in each glass.
Today, students got to make duck calls and were able to hear the differences in pitch when you pinched the duck calls. Students were also able to feel the vibration when the sound was made.
