School Health Advisory Council - SHAC

Marble Falls ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in health education instruction. Additionally, SHAC plays an important role in strengthening the connection between health and learning. SHAC also works to help parents and community stakeholders reinforce the knowledge and skills children need to stay healthy for a lifetime.
A majority of the members of SHAC must be parents of students enrolled in the District and who are not employed by the District. Also, one or more public school teachers, public school administrators, District students, health-care professionals, members of the business community, law enforcement representatives, senior citizens, clergy, representatives of nonprofit health organizations, or representatives of another group may serve. [See EHAA legal] by law, SHAC must meet at least four time annually.
SHAC meeting agendas are posted 72 hours in advance of the meeting date/time. Audio recordings and minutes from SHAC meetings will be posted to this page within 10 days of the meeting.

Section 28.004(q-1) of the Texas Education Code requires the Board of Trustees to adopt a resolution convening the local school health advisory council (SHAC) for the purpose of making recommendations regarding curriculum materials for the District's instruction relating to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. The Marble Falls ISD Board Resolution is linked below. The Marble Falls ISD SHAC presented final recommendations to the MFISD Board of Trustees on February 21, 2023.

By vote at the Marble Falls ISD Board of Trustees meeting on February 32, 2023, the Marble Falls ISD Board of Trustees voted to adopt the SHAC recommendations of Play It Safe! for K-8 and Not A Number for grades 9-12 as the curriculum materials for the District's instruction relating to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking.

On January 12, 2023, the Marble Falls ISD SHAC participated in presentations by staff in regards to recommended curriculum materials. By vote at the January 12, 2023 meeting, the Marble Falls ISD SHAC recommended Play It Safe! for K-8 and Not A Number for grades 9-12 as the curriculum materials for the District's instruction relating to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking.

The presentation is linked below.
On March 21st, administration presented an update to the Marble Falls ISD Board of Trustees regarding the progress of SHAC and district/campus staff in regards to the review and recommendation of PE and Health/Human Sexuality instructional materials in grades K-8. Administration plans to bring forward a final recommendation for PE and Health/Human Sexuality instructional materials to the April Board of Trustees meeting.

The Marble Falls ISD SHAC is currently working on reviewing instructional materials over PE, Health, and Human Sexuality under Proclamation 2022. New PE and Health/Human Sexuality TEKS are to be implemented and taught beginning the 2022-2023 school year.
