Second-graders in Bonnie LaMonaco’s class at Brooks Hill Elementary School were in for a treat this week when they had a visit from County Executive Adam Bello, as part of their participation in Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County’s 4-H Youth Development program.
With LaMonaco’s class participating in 4-H activities, they were chosen to have Bello visit the class as part of National Agriculture Week (March 21-25, 2022). During this week, volunteers throughout the state read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders.
Students in LaMonaco’s class benefited also from a hands-on activity on composting that was led by Executive Director Andrea Lista, of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County.
The book Bello read to students – Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table by Jacqueline Briggs Martin – will be donated to the school library.
“One of my favorite parts of my job is coming out and meeting all of you!” Bello said to the students. “I’m so proud of all of you for working so hard in school.”
LaMonaco said that she and her students have always enjoyed the programs offered by 4-H.
“We’ve done things like ice cream making and studying types of conifers,” she said. “This is a great volunteer opportunity and the students always enjoy it!”
