Culturally Responsive Practices
Adopted by the Board of Education in Spring 2018, the Fairport Central School District’s Strategic Initiatives outlines the future work of the District. Part of this work is continuing to prioritize work in the area of diversity, equity and access. Over the past two years, much has been done to work toward achieving the Plan’s mission (in part) to assure access and equity for all students and guide students’ development as compassionate, ethical, contributing members of diverse local and global communities.
Fairport Central School District is committed to:
- Recruiting, hiring and retaining a diverse staff.
- Reviewing and assessing educational policies and practices to create systemic change for the benefit of all our students and families.
- Bolstering long-term plans and expanding efforts to involve community members and listen to the voices of students and their families.
- Eliciting feedback to learn and create plans related to culturally responsive curriculum.
- Reviewing student data and being accountable for educating the whole child.
- Collaborating with neighboring districts to stand together and unite around the ideals of diversity, inclusion and equity for all students.

Staff Professional Learning
- All staff received training in the CRSEF and Restorative Practices in Summer 2021. Fairport has been collaborating with Partners in Restorative Initiatives (PiRI) to train administrators and teachers in the use of community circles. Community Circles build relationships, build community, and help people get to know each other better. Over the next few years training in Restorative Practices will continue and expand.
- New Teacher Program: Professional development for new teachers includes understanding the impact of poverty and meeting the needs of diverse learners.
- The National SEED Project (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity). Fairport implemented SEED in 2015. There are nine trained SEED Leaders in the District. Over 200 teachers, paraprofessionals, and office professionals have participated in SEED seminars since it was implemented.
Student Opportunities
- Students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to join a variety of extracurricular opportunities, including but not limited to: FHS DREAM (Demonstrate Racial Equality for All Mankind), Minerva Deland Student Leadership, FHS Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), Middle School Social Justice Club, and more.
- Roc2Change - Fairport is partnering with RCSD School Without Walls and St. John Fisher College to host The Student Summit on Race in Fall 2021.
