The Fairport Central School District recognizes Juneteenth, Saturday, June 19, 2021, as commemorating the day that enslaved people in Texas finally found out that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation – three years after President Lincoln signed this historic Proclamation.
Last year, Juneteenth was proclaimed an official public holiday in New York State and as of just this week on June 17, 2021, this day is now marked as an official federal holiday.
Students throughout all of Fairport schools have been learning about this holiday for the past month with special morning announcements and presentations celebrating our nation’s rich African American heritage.
