FACS At FHS

National Family & Consumer Sciences Educator Day, Feb. 10, 2021, highlights the value and importance of family and consumer sciences education and its educators as part of National FCCLA Week that falls the second week in February.

Family and consumer sciences (FACS), founded as ‘home economics’, focuses on teaching students personal development and career preparation skills in critical areas, such as nutrition and wellness, healthy food preparation, child and family development, environmental design, consumer decision making, and personal finance.

Family and consumer sciences educators also work within the Cooperative Extension system, through the nation’s land-grant universities. Extension educators bring family and consumer sciences research and education programs for both youth and adults to local communities.

Fairport is appreciative of its FACS educators and the work they do for students and the school community.

Pictured here is Fairport High School FACS Teacher Katie Jessup who is working with hybrid student (in-person) Matt Williams and remote student Emily Adams (baking from home) as they make cookies and hot cocoa.

Regardless of the different learning environments this school year with hybrid and 100% virtual instructional models, students are participating in the same activities and are doing so together. For example, Jessup packages ingredients and recipes for 100% virtual students to pick up. Students then participate together on their lab days with some students cooking at home and some cooking at school.

“This is a great example of our teachers providing high interest, hands-on experiences for our students,” said Martha Brown Assistant Principal and FACS Director Ryan Clair.
