Displayed throughout the halls of the Pasadena ISD Administration Building are 220 art pieces that encourage individuals to learn the sounds of fire safety.
The artwork was submitted by Pasadena ISD students in pre-K - 12 as part of an annual city-wide poster competition highlighting Fire Prevention Week (FPW), October 3-9.
The observance raises awareness about fire safety and promotes safety tips that families can use to protect one another. The theme for this year is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety,” which aims to educate everyone about the different sounds smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make, as well as the roar of fire and fire truck sirens.
While each art piece is unique, many designs were inspired by science or language arts classes and depict, for instance, sound waves and graphic novel-style art. Digital art paintings are also on display, which were created by intermediate and high school students.
“I am beyond proud of the entries submitted and the broad range of schools represented with the winners,” said Shannon Raygoza, PISD fine arts coordinator.
Sponsored by the Pasadena Fire Department and the Pasadena Fire Marshal’s Office, fire marshals and chiefs in the area had the opportunity to vote on their top art pieces. Out of the 220 entries, 18 students were named first, second or third place winners within their grade level division. Three high school students earned honorable mention.
The following students won first place in the high school, junior high and elementary divisions: Amie Turner of Pasadena High School; Joshua Washington of Park View Intermediate and Sebastian Carrillo of Gardens Elementary.
The top winners will advance to the fire district level and could have a chance to compete in the regional and then state competitions.
The FPW Poster competition is a long-standing tradition among the Pasadena Fire Marshall Department and Pasadena ISD. Pasadena Chief Fire Marshall David Brannon, who served as a judge in this year’s contest, said he was impressed by the number of entries this year.
“This is probably the best artwork submitted that I’ve ever seen,” Brannon said.
The artwork will continue to stay on display at the administration building for the next two weeks. Please scroll below for the full list of winners.
