Dear Fairport School Community:
As you may be aware, over the past several months we have been collaboratively working with Perinton Town Supervisor Mike Barker, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and officials from Waste Management regarding the odors near and around Dudley/Northside Elementary Schools.
After several months of monitoring the air for hydrogen sulfide levels (a colorless gas with a rotten-egg odor) at Dudley/Northside, the results show that air quality levels are considered safe and in good standing. Since March 21, 2018, there have been no odor events at Dudley/Northside.
Over the past couple of months, there were low level detections of hydrogen sulfide that remained below the NYSDEC guideline of 10 parts per billion (ppb). These levels were evaluated per District protocol. It is speculated that the roofing material, which contains petroleum asphalt, may possibly off-gas low levels of hydrogen sulfide as a result of hot summer days. At times, the temperature on the roof was in excess of 120°F which warms the roofing materials and increases the likelihood of generating vapors. Other possible sources of hydrogen sulfide include sewer systems and rooftop plumbing vents.
We have been informed that air monitoring will continue at least into the fall. The District has requested that the monitors remain at Dudley/Northside throughout the 2018-19 school year. As always, the welfare of our students and staff is of utmost importance; we are committed to providing comfortable, healthy, and safe learning environments.
Sincerely,
Brett Provenzano
Superintendent of Schools
