Unit 6:  Decimals on Grids and Number Lines (Decimals, Fractions and Percents)

A. Understand the meaning of decimal fractions

• Identify everyday uses of fractions and decimals (K)

 Students use their understanding of fractions and the number system to order and compare decimals to the thousandths.  Grids and number lines are used to as representations to learn about the relationships among decimals.  Students also find decimal equivalents for fractions by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

• Students use grids to help them visualize and identify the place value of decimal fractions as they begin adding decimals.  Using a variety of different contexts, students add decimal fractions and consider how the addition strategies they use for addition of whole numbers apply to adding quantities less than one.
