Scates, David

Welcome to a new school year! I am Mr. Scates (pronounced just like the skates people wear on their feet!). This is my 18th year teaching at Hoover and I do not plan on going anywhere else soon. I was hired back in the Fall of 1995 after I completed my teaching credential program at Cal State University Northridge. I have a B.A. in Physical Education and M.A. in Educational Administration. My credentials allow me to teach both Health and P.E. In addition, I have earned an administrative credential, which allows me to take an Assistant Principal position.

Born in Burbank, CA, I grew up in the municipality of Tarzana in the San Fernando Valley. Currently married with a two year old son, I still live in the valley. Besides teaching, I also serve in the United States Coast Guard Reserve Forces as a Marine Science Technician, Second Class. The summer of 2010 I was recalled to Slidell, Louisiana, in the Gulf of Mexico to serve in the “Deep Water Horizon” oil spill clean up. When I have spare time, in addition to spending time with my wife and son, I enjoy cyling, playing beach volleyball, surfing, going to the movies and reading both fiction and non-fiction books.

My Teaching Philosophy

Health presents a golden opportunity for students to cultivate the life skills necessary to be prepared to ultimately achieve independence after high school and participate lawfully and productively in American society, while pursuing their individual happiness.
