Chan, Cynthia

Personal Biography

I have been a teacher at Hoover High School for 17 years now!  This year I will be teaching Living Earth.

I graduated from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, with a Major in Biology and Minor in Communication Studies.  I then attended Monterey Institute of International Studies and got my Masters of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).  I also obtained my Professional Clear Secondary Single Subject Credential in Biology from Point Loma Nazarene University.

My passion is to help students from different background and ability learn.  Being an EL student myself when I was in high school, I understand the challenges, difficulties, and frustrations students who are English learners face as they try to learn content material in a second, or third, language.  I absolutely love it when the students in my classes acquire knowledge, learn new skills, and gain confidence as they learn Biology, the study of living things and the world around them.

During my free time, I enjoy eating yummy food, spending time with friends and family, and watching TV shows and movies.  I am a HUGE fan of Doctor Who, Sherlock, Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, Schit's Creek, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, the MCU, and all the late night talk shows.  I also "enjoy" running and finished my first marathon in 2016.  Right now I'm into all the Shawn T workouts like T25 and Insanity Max 30.
