Mrs. Clark
Welcome to 5th grade! This is an exciting year filled with lots of fun activities and adventures, as well as preparing for middle school. This year we are working towards students becoming self managers and independent problem solvers.
I grew up in the Edmonds area and graduated from Edmonds Woodway High School. Afterwards, I attended Pacific Lutheran University and graduated in May of 2016. I have been teaching at Columbia in 5th grade since 2016. This is a fun age because of the exciting projects and activities we get to do.
In August of 2018, I graduated with my Master's in Educational Technology. I try to incorporate technology into lessons and activities in meaningful ways to enhance student learning and engagement. Using technology is a great way to meet all students' needs and to prepare students with 21st century skills. I am so glad to be at Columbia and I love teaching the wonderful fifth graders!
Questions About 5th Grade
-
Is there homework in 5th grade?
For 5th grade, there is typically nightly homework for math however, the teachers give in-class work time. Many students are able to get much of their homework done during this time. There may be times when packets are sent home on Monday and due back on Friday that is related to the content we are learning. The 5th grade teachers do not believe in sending home busy work that is not related to what students are learning.

Do the 5th graders go to camp?
Yes! Camp is an amazing experience for the 5th graders. They have the opportunity to learn environmental and outdoor education through hands on and experiential learning. Camp is three days and two nights, and is a great way for the 5th graders to be truly unplugged from technology. While camp is all based on education, the students have a lot of fun! This will be in June, and there is more information closer to the time of camp.

How do I help my 5th grader be middle school ready?
Much of what we focus on in 5th grade is preparing for middle school. We want both the students and parents to feel confident that they are ready for this next step. Throughout out the school year, the teachers increase the expectations and independence of the 5th graders. Something you can help your child do is become independent problem solvers. Help your child learn to advocate for their needs and ask questions when they have them. This is a very important skill moving on to 6th grade.
