Individual students may be referred to see the counselor for a variety of reasons --  peer conflicts, test anxiety, family changes, loss of a loved one, chronic illness of a loved one, or a bad day -- just to name a few. Any student may request to see the counselor, or may be referred by a teacher or parent. Individual sessions are appropriate for short-term concerns (6 visits or fewer). If you think long-term support is needed to support your child, I can work with you to make a referral to an outside agency.

    Confidentiality

Individual sessions with students are confidential. Exceptions are noted on my homepage. When I begin individual services for the first time, confidentiality is explained to students. I also explain to them that sometimes I will encourage them to talk to you (the parent) or the teacher about what we have discussed, or I will ask for their permission to share with an adult directly on their behalf.

Maintaining bounds of confidentiality are important for everyone (children and adults) to feel comfortable. A counseling relationship that maintains confidentiality encourages participants to share deeply, and develop a counseling relationship that leads to positive change.
