I believe small groups are one of the best ways to reach students. Not only is it more efficient, allowing more students to be served at one time, it has multiple advantages for the counseling process. Some of those advantages are listed below:
- Students see they are not alone in their experiences.
- Students are able to learn from their peers' experiences.
- Students are able to relate their experience to others' experiences.
- Students develop empathy and improve communication skills.
- Students develop relationships that form a peer support group outside of the counseling setting.
Small Group Topics
The most common small group topics are listed below. Additional groups may be formed based on need.
To refer your child to a small group, look for a link in the fall in teacher newsletters and a Lancer Living email or contact me directly by email or phone.
Limits of confidentiality are the same in small groups as in individual counseling (see my homepage). We begin every group by reviewing confidentiality and the importance of respecting other group members privacy. If students in a group break confidentiality, they may be dismissed from the group.
