All students K-6 visit with Mrs. Carlisle for whole group lessons.
Purpose of classroom lessons:
Classroom lessons align with the American School Counselor Association's National Standards for School Counseling. The three areas of focus are academic, social, and career development. Lessons are designed to equip students with applicable tools to make and keep friends, stay safe, avoid and resolve conflicts, and encourage a positive school environment.
Academic
Lessons in academics teach students skills they need to be a successful student, and, one day, adult. These skills include good study habits, organization, planning and prioritizing, and setting personal goals.
Career Development
Career interest is the focus in lower grades (K-3). Lessons for Kindergarten through third grade emphasize the possible careers one could choose. As students mature, we look at personality and how our interests and natural talents lend themselves to specific career fields.
Social Development
In elementary grades, the social development of students is the primary focus. Classroom lessons focus growing social skills that are necessary for positive peer interactions. Lessons include identifying characteristics of a good friend, making and keeping friends, differentiating between bullying and conflict, conflict resolution, staying safe, communication skills, promoting a growth mindset, and how to cope with difficult emotions (anxiety, disappointment, etc.).
