SCCOE helps families navigate public schools in Santa Clara CountySAN JOSE, CA – The beginning of the school year can be a stressful time for students and parents, especially those who are transitioning to a new grade, new school, or for families that are new to the area completely. For this reason, the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) is releasing a six-part informational series, entitled "Navigating Public Schools in Santa Clara County," to help families and newcomers across the county.

A recent study found that over half of Americans are effectively financially illiterate. In an effort to be a part of the solution, The Simple Dollar -- a website dedicated to conducting data-driven and unbiased research -- has created a series of guides designed for students and parents that give practical advice on developing and building upon healthy financial habits throughout one's life as well as a comprehensive guidebook on credit. View the resources below: The Importance of Your Voice and Self-LoveThe stages of being a teen and growing into an adult are not easy. While in those stages, many may lose confidence or feel down due to their thoughts or environments, which is where the importance of one's voice and self-love comes in. If your child does feel down and has little confidence in themselves, encouraging them and offering them support can boost their confidence and change their mindset to a more positive one.
Why Self-Love is Important and How to Cultivate It. BTS, a worldwide phenomenon and K-Pop group, has partnered with Unicef to promote their message of the importance of self-love and to speak themselves. Through their music and campaign, they hope to inspire those of all ages to have a positive mindset and more confidence in themselves. Kim Namjoon, BTS's leader, has spoken at the United Nations to bring more awareness and spread their message further. Love Yourself, Speak Yourself. "13 Reasons Why" Netflix series: Guidance for families and educatorsThe National Association of School Psychologists has sent a notice to school mental health professionals across the country about how families and schools can talk to students about the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why." Educators and mental health professionals across the country are warning parents about the show, saying its graphic depiction of a teenager's suicide may contribute to a "contagion effect" among people with mental illness.
A Netflix spokesman issued a statement saying the company has heard that the show has “opened up a dialogue” about the intense themes depicted in it. Netflix said it added explicit warnings to the three most graphic episodes and is adding another warning before the first episode. The statement said it also produced a behind-the-scenes documentary about the show called “Behind the Reasons.” In it, the actors and creators indicate they consulted with mental health professionals on some aspects of the show. Resources for immigration supportThere are times in our history when greater understanding and care for one another resulted from discord in society. This year’s election process and presidential inauguration is one of those moments, what Jack Weinstein (Senior Program Advisor at Facing History and Ourselves, and former educational leader at MHS) calls a “flashpoint” in time. It is neither about good nor bad, right nor wrong, it is an opportunity for us to guide our youth in learning how to use civil dialogue to express their feelings, questions and wonderings about what they read on social media, hear in the news, in our community, and from one another. It is not a time to argue, it is a time to listen, seek understanding, empathize, and be connected to one another.
In these uncertain times for our families who have immigrated to Milpitas, our employees continue to stand UNIFIED in our commitment to work together and show that Milpitas values every single student, regardless of background, experience, and views. We have increased our efforts in creating a Culture of We so that our students feel that they belong, and can continue to learn in a safe environment. Our thoughts and support go out to the community as they continue to heal and rebuild in the wake of their loss.
Although it happened in Southern California, I recognize that as the images continue to play out on television the thought that this could have happened anywhere is a reality. And I understand that you and your child may have questions or concerns about returning to school on Monday. As a school district, counselors will be available for those students who need additional support when they return to school on Monday. Simply let your school Principal know, so s/he can connect you to school counseling services. I also encourage you to have an open discussion with your children to help them process the incident, and more importantly, provide them the assurance of safety and comfort. I want to assure you that student and campus safety is of utmost importance to everyone in the Milpitas Unified School District. We certainly hope that our planning is never put to use, but to help ensure campus safety and security, every year we evaluate and update our District Emergency Preparedness Plan. This ongoing process details step-by-step guidelines and policies for all personnel and site locations to follow in preparing for or in the event an emergency. In addition, drills are practiced each year to ensure everyone is aware of his/her roles and duties in establishing the safety of our students and staff. Homeless Students MatterMessage from CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson:
The California Department of Education (CDE) would like to remind local educational agencies (LEAs) of the provisions of the McKinney-Vento Act’s Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program. EHCY is the key piece of federal legislation pertaining to the education of over 240,000 California children and youth experiencing homelessness from early childhood through high school graduation. Every LEA is required to implement these provisions. EHCY’s key themes are school access and stability, support for educational success, and child-centered decision-making. Click here to read more
