The Naming of WM Irvin Elementary School

William Morris Irvin was born and raised in Concord.  He was a teacher, principal, and superintendent of Concord City Schools.  He retired when Cabarrus County Schools merged with Concord City.  He obtained his doctorate from Duke University.  All four of his children graduated from Concord High School.  While he was superintendent he lived outside the city limits.  He felt his children should attend the schools he was superintendent of so they moved inside the city limits. This is where his grandchildren now live and attended the school named in his honor. WM Irvin Elementary School opened in August 1999 and recently celebrated its 22nd year of educating students.

WM Irvin Elementary was built to relieve the overcrowding in four other elementary schools. It now accommodates right at 800 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

The building has 55 classrooms, a media center, an inquiry lab, a functioning garden, a gym, a cafeteria with a stage, and an outdoor area with two playgrounds which include a baseball field and basketball court.

WM Irvin is a school with a dedicated staff who follow the standards set by the state of North Carolina. The staff focuses on the individual needs of their students through the implementation of various academic programs. Students, staff, and parents work as a team to make certain students reach their highest potential. Together, we are meeting high academic standards and preparing our students for greatness.
