Sight Words

sight words
Here are some quick and simple ideas to help reinforce sight word practice at home. You can use sight word sheets that classroom teachers are able to supply or make them into flashcards.

- Echo reading: you say the word, the child repeats the word.

- Writing: the child can use different writing tools (pens, crayons, highlighters, etc.) to spell the words and then reads them to you afterwards.

"The child is the teacher”: have the child choose one word at a time for you to read to him/her. You can read the word correctly or incorrectly and have him/her tell you whether you were right or wrong. If you are “wrong”, have the child read the correct word.

- Rhyming: have a few sight word cards laid out and say a word that rhymes with one of the sight word cards. He or she chooses which sight word rhymes. (hot – not, man – ran, get - let, etc.) - Spotlight Words-Hang up your flashcards on a wall.  Turn off the lights and use a flashlight to point to each word and read it. - 60 Second Words-Set a timer and see how many words you can read in 60 seconds. Count the words and see if you can read them next time in less than 60 seconds. - Magazine Words-Pick a word from your flashcards. Use old magazines or newspapers to find the word. Circle, highlight or cut it out.  Please remember that repetition and constant practice are very important in making recognition of sight words automatic. Once the basic sight words are memorized, your child will read more fluently and with greater comprehension.
