Real World "School Work"

Sitting in class many students wonder what is the purpose of this lesson?  Why do I need to know how to multiply or divide fractions?  Why do I need to read closely and know how to write complete sentences?  As I was cooking supper last night, I thought of all the skills I had used in order to make a meal for my family.

The first thing I did was to read through the recipe closely. I had to double the recipe so that there would be enough food to feed us all and have a little leftover for lunch the next day. I had to know how to multiply fractions, convert certain measurements, and know how to write in detail so that I could replicate the recipe again if I wanted to. For dessert, I cut the recipe in half because I didn't have enough of the ingredients to make one whole batch.
