Close Reading in Middle School

Welcome back from Winter Break! The sixth-grade students have come back from break energized and ready to learn. We have been working on our close reading skills. Close reading is an interaction that involves observation and interpretation between the reader and a text. It is an intensive analysis of a text in order to come to terms with what it says, how it says it, and what it means. Close reading means that the students can use textual evidence to analyze what a text says. The students are able to analyze how a sentence contributes to the overall meaning of a text. In the next few weeks, we will start reading The Giver by Lois Lowry and will evaluate examples of writing using the 6 + 1 Traits.
