2nd Grade STEM project
As the anticipation of Christmas was upon us, we found ourselves reading the story "How to Catch and Elf" by Adam Wallace and then deciding to try to create an elf trap of our own.
The students had a budget of $200 STEM money that they were allowed to use to purchase materials. They purchased tape, aluminum foil, popsicle sticks, yarn, string, pipe cleaners, cups, and cardboard.
They spent quite some time masterminding and putting into play how their traps would work. Many wanted to try sweet treats as bait!
When the final timer buzzed, (We had to stop at some point! They would have built for days!) we gathered around to try them out.
We made elf like creations and tried to lure them up into our traps. They used a pulley system (which we had been learning about in our simple machines unit) to try out their elf trap to see if it was effective.
The students cheered each other on and had a great time. I just wonder if any of them tried to catch the real elves?
