High School Credit Diploma Program

The High School Credit Diploma Program is an alternative route designed to assist the student in completing a high school degree while learning life and career skills.  Students entering the program must meet the following requirements:

Our goal is to meet the unique individual needs of each student enrolled in the program.  Students may combine credits awarded for prior academic work with credits earned through current learning experiences.  Required courses in English, mathematics, social studies, and science are offered every semester, as well as various electives that can be used to attain a high school diploma.

Student Expectations

Students enrolled in the High School Credit Diploma Program are encouraged and expected to:

Attendance Policy

Students enrolled in the High School Credit Diploma Program are expected to attend class daily.  Attendance is one of the criteria on which the awarding of credit is based in this accelerated diploma program.  The East Haven Adult Learning Center does not allow course credit to be awarded if the student is absent more than 5 times in a session semester). The student will forfeit course credit after 5 absences.  No exceptions will be made to this policy including early dismissals for appointments.  If a teacher asks you to leave class you will receive an absence. If further clarification is needed, please contact the East Haven Adult Learning Center administration.

Tardiness Policy

Students enrolled in the High School Credit Diploma Program are expected to be on time for class daily.  Once bell sounds, students should proceed to their scheduled class.  Students who arrive to class late may be permitted to enter the class, but will receive a zero and absence for that class period.  If the teacher does not allow you in the classroom, please see the Guidance Counselor.  Finally, students may lose daily class credit if they leave the classroom before the completion of the class period.

Transfer Credit

Most credits transferred from high school, Vocational/technical School, or other adult education programs are accepted.  An official transcript is required to transfer any credits.  A certified counselor at the East Haven Adult Learning Center will review the transfer credit(s).  Students pursuing credit restoration must advocate for themselves to have them restored.  The Facilitator or Guidance Counselor will not get involved in the process.  Students will be notified of credit acceptance or rejection after the review.

Community Service Credit

Students may earn one credit for one hundred documented hours of community service work (not court ordered) or earn half credit for fifty hours.  All hours must be completed at the same organization.  Students must schedule an appointment with Barbara Kovacs prior to volunteering. Barbara will give the student a form that must be completed by the organization upon completion of the community service hours.  To receive credit the form must be returned by May 1st in the academic year the hours were completed.

Work Credit

Students may earn one credit for documented full-time work for one year at the same organization or part-time for two years at the same organization.  One credit for any occupational license (CNA, hairdresser, etc.) or documented formalized job or apprenticeship training will be granted.  Students must schedule an appointment with a certified counselor at the East Haven Adult Learning Center to discuss this credit option.  The counselor will give the student a form that must be completed by the employer.  To receive credit the form must be returned by May 1st along with either a W-2, 1040, or 1040 EZ form.

Military Credit

Students may earn up to two credits for documented military experience.  One credit will be awarded for basic training and one credit for special training.  Students must schedule an appointment with a certified counselor at the East Haven Adult Learning Center to discuss this credit option.  The counselor will give the student a form that must be completed by the appropriate military agency.
