CalSTRS FAQ

What is CalSTRS?

The California State Teachers' Retirement System was established by law in 1913 to provide retirement benefits to California's public school educators from prekindergarten through community college. CalSTRS is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world.

CUSD is part of the Defined Benefit Program that provides retirement, survivor and disability benefits.  Your Defined Benefit retirement benefit is based on a formula set by law using your age, service credit and final compensation.  Please see the CalSTRS Member Handbook in the downloads section to the right.

What does payroll need if I'm retiring from CalSTRS?

You will need to submit a Resignation/Retirement Form through Human Resources.

Payroll only needs the Express Benefit Report (EBR) submitted to us and you only need to fill out Section 1 and either drop off to us or scan/email back to us at [email protected], the EBR form is located under downloads to the right. This form will transfer any Sick Leave you have to CalSTRS for any additional service credit. This will be submitted closer to your retirement date.

What can my CalSTRS Retirement Date be?

Your CalSTRS retirement date must be AFTER your last contracted day of pay with CUSD. For example if your last contracted day with CUSD is 6/7; therefore, your retirement date with CalSTRS will be no sooner than 6/8. Please contact CalSTRS if you are unsure of your retirement date.

How does my Sick Leave get Transferred to CalSTRS?

Your Sick Leave will get transferred to CalSTRS closer to your retirement date via the Express Benefit Report of which you only need to fill out Section 1 and submit to the Payroll Department.  You can either drop it off or scan/email to [email protected]. If your sick leave balance changes after being reported to CalSTRS, the district will inform CalSTRS of the new balance.

What happens with my Deferred Summer Pay when I retire?

Your deferred summer pay will be paid out to you upon retirement. If you are retiring in June, then June will be your last paycheck from CUSD and will include your deferred summer pay. If you need to change your W-4 Federal Tax Withholdings, it needs to be submitted by the 15th of the month.
