I am a 1988 graduate of South Caldwell High School where I participated on the swimming team and sang in the chorus for three years. I attended UNC Charlotte where I received a BA degree in History, Secondary Social Studies Education in 1993. I also minored in Journalism and was Editor in Chief of UNCC's paper, The University Times, during my senior year. In 2002, I graduated from Appalachian State University with an MA in History, Secondary Education with a Social Studies/Community College focus.

I began teaching as an adjunct instructor in the Humanities and Social Science Department at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in 2003 where I have taught the American History and World Civilization classes. I have also been fortunate to quest lecture in the annual Holocaust class and have developed a class on the Vietnam War. I am currently working on developing a class on African American History. In 2009, I began writing a history column for the Lenoir News Topic. My column is usually published in the weekly edition of the paper.  The Hickory Daily Record publishes my column once a month as well.  In the fall of 2023, I accepted an adjunct instructor position to each part time at the Hickory Campus of Appalachian State University.

At South Caldwell High School, I like to involve myself in the work of education and supporting students.  I sponsor the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Students club at the high school as well.

When I am not at work, I enjoy time with my wife, Beverly, and two kids - Ben and Olivia. I still swim, but also enjoy readiing, writing, and walking the dog. You can also find me as one of the voices of Spartan Football on home Friday nights. In the winter, I also coach the Spartan Men's and Women's swim teams.
