Mexico Middle School History

  • In 1964, the original school was built for grades three through six. In the mid-1970’s, the seventh grade was moved to the school and grades three and four moved to the elementary schools.

In 1980, the eighth grade was added to the school making it a middle school. Over the years, several additions have occurred with the most recent being in 2010.
With that project, a new gymnasium was constructed, the previous gymnasium was converted into a state of the art performing arts center, and the District Office, which had occupied a converted dry cleaning building on Academy Street, was relocated to renovated classroom space that was no longer needed.

The middle school provides a transition from the self-contained elementary program to the more departmentalized high school program. The team approach is used and, in addition to core subjects, students can study technology, home and careers, foreign languages, advanced math, and studio art. In addition, band and chorus programs are available to the students, along with modified sports that offer split seasons.
