After conducting a search for the next Evans Middle School principal, Ottumwa Schools has decided to appoint Executive Director of Operations, Dave Harper, as interim principal for the 2022-2023 school year. Harper is a former Evans principal from 2012-2014.
The decision to place Harper as an interim principal demonstrates the district's commitment to excellence for Evans. Having an exceptional leader like Harper will help build a strong culture and climate for Evans students and staff. This move is also part of a proposed plan for creating more personalized learning environments by transforming Evans into an 8-9 building and Liberty a 6-7 building for the 2023-24 school year. Should this become a reality, it will allow Harper to mentor and prepare the next principal of Evans and Liberty when they transition to the new grade configurations.
“We’re so excited to place Dave’s extensive experience as a middle school principal and his passion for working with students and staff in creating a caring and dynamic learning environment," said Superintendent McGrory. "Dave recognizes his leadership is critical in our success at Evans. The students and staff of Evans will experience the positive impact he will be at Evans almost immediately.”
“I’m so committed to the district’s vision of excellence and Superintendent McGrory’s leadership," said Harper. "I know what I can bring to the table as a leader to help our students and staff be successful and help prepare the next leader.”
The district is also announcing the hiring of Aaron Deutsch, who will serve as one of the assistant principals at Evans, beginning in the 2022-23 school year. Deutsch is currently the 7-12 Dean of Students and Activities Director for Pekin Community Schools. In addition to Deutsch, Ottumwa Schools will also be adding an additional assistant principal to support Evans students and staff further.
“Aaron is a young man of immense character who will help build good relationships with students and staff,” said Harper. “He’s a student-centered leader who’s approachable. I look forward to working with him at Evans.” Deutsch brings excellent experience as a science teacher and content leader. In 2020, he received the Governor’s Scholar Recognition for favorite teacher.
Pending board approval, Deutsch will begin his duties August 1.
Ottumwa Schools is committed to Being The Best district in the state. Placing great leaders in
positions to help move this vision forward is paramount.
