8th Grade ELA Classes Plan Community Service Projects

Students in Mrs. Millikin's 8th Grade Language Arts classes are beginning a Moral Compass Unit. In this unit, students are discussing the question: How do human beings draw upon their experiences to make a difference in the world and to make themselves better people? Students are planning and executing community service project. Students work through the following steps: 1) Find a local cause/organization to get excited about, 2) Develop a plan to assist the organization, 3)Create a tangible goal and set a goal date, 4)Create a presentation to demonstrate what they have learned and reflect upon the unit's essential moral compass question.

Student projects include adopting elementary and pre-school classrooms within the district, volunteering to clean up their neighborhoods, cleaning up the school, providing supplies and food for Heartland Human Society, gifting pencils to teachers in the building, playing instruments at care homes, as well as many others.
