Students Showcase Business Start-Ups

Several pre-algebra classes at Evans Middle School are hosting an Entrepreneur Night on Thursday, April 6 from 5-7 p.m. at Market on Main in Ottumwa. Tickets are $2 at the door, with proceeds supporting future business efforts.

Seventh graders in Mrs. Van Wyk’s pre-algebra classes are learning math through real life activities. Teams of students in each class have formed small businesses to learn their math concepts.

Van Wyk is one of a few teachers in the district who have created environments that are more project-based and student-centered.  An Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation grant helped Van Wyk create this unique learning environment.

Her “flipped” classroom reverses the typical lecture and homework elements. She creates short video lessons that her students view at home, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. By doing this, Van Wyk carved out time to allow her students to learn pre-algebra concepts through starting their own business.

This year there are 14 business start-ups, ranging from video games to food-related endeavors. During Entrepreneur Night, students will showcase their businesses, demonstrate products, and have samples available. The event is open to the community.
