COMMUNITY

Ottumwa, Iowa, population 24,545, is located 90 miles southeast of the state capital. The city is primarily a blue-collar community, situated on the bluffs overlooking the Des Moines River and surround by rich agricultural land. Ottumwa, which means “Rippling Waters,” is the county seat of Wapello County and is the largest community in a 10-county area. It serves as a regional hub for post-secondary education, healthcare, transportation, and retail. The largest industries are manufacturing, health care and social assistance, and retail trade.

SCHOOL

Ottumwa High School is a four-year comprehensive high school serving 1,400 students in grades 9-12. It is accredited by North Central Association and the State of Iowa Department of Public Instruction. The school year is divided into two semesters of 90 days in length. Class size averages 25 students with seven 46-minute periods. There are 80 certified teachers, four school counselors, five administrators, one librarian, and two nurses.

Ottumwa High School offers the following AP courses:  AP Art History, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Human Geography, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, and AP Psychology.  In addition to these courses, students may be eligible to participate in AP online. 
Concurrent enrollment: 
A variety of concurrent classes are offered and taught at Ottumwa High School. Students receive both high school and college credit. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in classes online or at Indian Hills Community College campus.
