OHS seniors, Addison Ransom and Anna Wellings are hoping to increase membership to their school's National Honor Society (NHS). The two are part of an effort to educate the student body about what National Honor Society is and the benefits of being a part of it.
Current members are working in teams of two and presenting NHS information to groups of students during their Connections time. "I didn't know what it was until I was invited to join," said Wellings. The two hope to change that and increase membership during the next induction ceremony on May 24.
OHS juniors and seniors are eligible if:
- They are a student in good standing (discipline and attendance).
- Have a 3.2 GPA or higher.
- Have earned 22 activity points for involvement in clubs, sports, fine arts.
Twenty-three OHS students are current members. They meet regularly and are required to volunteer 10 hours each semester. The group currently is involved in a third grade reading program and have adopted a section of highway to clean.
During a recent presentation, Ransom shared the advantages of membership, including scholarship opportunities, listing on college applications, and being involved in the community. "It's never too early to start thinking about it," said Ransom. Sponsor Wendy Maas also notes that membership in National Honor Society is part of a student's permanent transcript.
