Ottumwa Schools will host Sweets & Sounds on Saturday, January 29 at Ottumwa High School. The annual performance fundraiser features the Ottumwa High School and Evans Middle School show choirs and jazz bands. Desserts will be available, starting at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria, with the show starting at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission is $5 per student and $7 per adult.
Jazz band and show choir are extracurricular activities within the Ottumwa fine arts department. Jazz band is composed of students in the OHS band program who audition. Students also audition to participate in the OHS show choir, Sudden Impact, and rehearse outside the school day. Sudden Impact’s high-energy competition performance is approximately 18 minutes long, features five songs with choreography and costume changes. Sudden Impact will compete in several invitationals during the months of February and March.
In its tenth year, the Evans Show Choir rehearses two days each week with extra rehearsals on Saturdays for choreography. Students must be members of the Evans concert band or choir to participate. Performances include Sweets & Sounds, the annual Pops concert, and a performance at Liberty Elementary School.
The event is sponsored by the Community 1st Credit Union, Modern Floor Covering, South Ottumwa Savings Bank, John Deere, and Ottumwa Noon Kiwanis.
