AP Biology students are working on a genetic engineering unit. They investigated two questions:
- How does the concentration of ampicillin affect E. coli growth?
- How does the concentration of arabinose sugar affect Green Florescent Protein gene expression?
Students found that the greater the concentration of ampicillin, the greater the zone of no bacterial growth (tan plates) and the greater the concentration of arabinose (induced sugar), the greater the expression of GFP (more it glowed green under UV light). Appropriate chemicals were placed on the disc and added to the growing plates.
