Four Ottumwa teams qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Orlando on June 11 and 12 after regional competition held in April. The teams will compete with approximately 300 teams from around the United States.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division.

Each year Odyssey of the Mind provides five competitive problems, whose subject matter varies from the technical to the artistic to the classical. Teams choose the problem they wish to solve and create a solution to present in competition against other teams in the same grade range. Long-term problems require teams to begin preparing their solutions weeks or months before competition. Each problem includes one or more objectives, a set of limitations and requirements, and specific scoring categories. All problems have an eight minute time limit.

Teams who will compete in the World Finals include:

  • The Owls team from Evans is focusing on a virtual problem. As part of the virtual reality world, they will design and build various technical effects, which include changing something from two-dimensional into three-dimensional. Teams members include: Owls (virtual problem) from Evans: Talise Plate, Grady Zuithoff, Jade Davis, Noah Fogle, Alyssa Turner, Lydia Krueger, and Adeline Thompson
  • Oh No, it's a Trap (structure problem) team from Evans designed and built a 15 gram structure made of only balsa wood and glue that captures a moving object. The structure is combined with a humerous performance that includes a narrator that alerts the audience to the action and the traps.  Team members include: Carlos Jimenez, Carson Palmer, Marijose Andrade, Tamsin McElderry, Karen Rameriz, Violet McFarlin, and Yerusalem Gebremedhin.
  • Two Ottumwa teams will focus on the classics problem, Omer and the Beanstalk. Favorite story books come alive when a special bean grows into a magic “beanstalk” that takes a youngster into a storybook land. There, a creative host guides them as they meet different storybook characters and encounter objects from selected stories that exist together in this mystical land. Members of the Evans team include:  Luke Thompson, Andrew Hunger, Anthony Rivera, Molly Freikfert, Jaclyn Blackwell, Giselle Cordova, and Emerson Keith. OHS team members include:  North Lindell, Teagan Holman, Madi Greene, Lydia Roling, Gael Batres, Carter Kendrick, and Samantha Kamphalonavoug.
