After conducting a search for the next Ottumwa High School principal, Ottumwa Schools didn’t have to look any further than their own backyard. Ottumwa Schools has named Mark Hanson as head principal of OHS. Pending board approval, he will begin his duties on July 1. Hanson replaces Richard Hutchinson, who is stepping down at the end of the 2020-21 school year due to health concerns.
Hanson previously served as OHS principal for 7 years, retiring in 2017. His accomplishments included improving the graduation rate and implementing a variety of programs to improve school culture and climate; curriculum and instruction; and opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities. Several programs, including Silver Cord, Best Buddies, and Interact Club are still active. In retirement, he continued to have a positive influence on Ottumwa’s students, coaching 8th grade boys basketball and varsity boys tennis.
The decision to return was an easy one for Hanson. “I felt like there was more to do,” he said. “I missed it.” His plans for the coming year revolve around culture and climate. “I want to be able to engage all parents and create a welcoming environment for all students and families,” he said. “Once you have those relationships, then the academic results will follow.”
In another OHS leadership change, Shelley Bramschreiber will transition from her current role as assistant principal to associate principal. “This is a new position,” said Bramschreiber. “The duties will be carved out of what Mark needs and wants.” The change will increase her leadership role as she works closely with Hanson to oversee the day-to-day operation of the school, with a strong focus on curriculum and instruction. “There are many facets to educational leadership, one of my passions is with curriculum and instruction,” Bramschreiber said. “I am excited for the opportunity to work more directly with teachers as we prepare our graduates to successfully navigate their post-secondary plans.”
She also looks forward to working with Hanson in a leadership capacity. “Working with someone as experienced as Mark Hanson will give me a tremendous opportunity for professional growth,” she said.
“I’m really excited to work with Shelley,” said Hanson. “The two of us will be able to provide strong leadership to the building. I’m looking forward to that opportunity.”
