Ottumwa High School's therapy dog, Gus, has been inducted into the Iowa Animal Hall of Fame. Gus was nominated by Dr. Lori Hickie. "Gus' dedication to the students at OHS and his eagerness to work with children at the library makes him deserving of this honor," said Hickie in her nomination.
Gus and his owner, Jen Chesnut, received the award at the Iowa Events Center Animal Rescue League Raise Your Paw Gala and Auction this past weekend in Des Moines. Gus even sported a tie for the occasion, voted on by the OHS students he serves.
Several years ago, an OHS staff member suggested Chesnut, an OHS biology teacher, seek therapy dog certification for her dog. Gus took the training and passed through Therapy Dog International. He began serving OHS as a therapy dog in 2016 and interacted with at least 150 students each day.
While he spends his time in Chesnut's biology classroom, other students who could benefit from Gus are brought in when needed.
Chesnut has a second dog, Piper, who is also a certified therapy dog. The two dogs had previously rotated duties. Gus is now mostly retired due to allergies.
Therapy dogs have a positive effect on the emotional well-being of the students. They also influence cognitive development. Interacting with therapy dogs can improve students' reading skills, memory, and problem-solving skills.
