OHS senior, Mitch Wood, has known he would be a Hawkeye since his freshman year. Today he made it official.
Wood, the son of Rick and Shelley Wood, signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Iowa. The senior middle infielder and pitcher has been playing the sport since he was five. "We live close to a field and I'd go there after school and play pick up games with friends," he said. "I fell in love with it (baseball) at a pretty young age."
He played on every baseball team possible growing up, except last season when he missed Legion baseball due to COVID-19. He also participated in other sports throughout high school, including three years of football, one year in wrestling and track, and golf for the first time this fall. He is also in Torch Club.
He works out daily to improve his skills, lifting weights, hitting, glove work, and speed work. His older brother, Chase, who played baseball at the community college level, helps with some of his training.
His advice to younger players, "play the game as hard as you can." His dad and brother always remind him, "never let the crowd know how you are playing, it should always look the same."
