OHS students showed no party preference during the 2020 Fall Iowa Youth Straw Poll. Students voted for President/Vice President, US Senate, and US Representative for district 2. Winners were:
- President - Kanye West/Michelle Tidball (no party)
- US Senate - Theresa Greenfield (Democrat)
- US Representative District 2 - Mariannette Miller-Meeks (Republican)

When comparing participation rates to the 2016 election, OHS had 1,193 voters in 2016, compared to 1,018 who voted today. If looking at percent of total students, 43.4 percent of the students participated in 2016, compared to 37.1 percent in 2020, according to Scott Guest, American Government teacher.
Each year, this fun, interactive civics exercise helps demonstrate to students statewide the importance of voting in our country. The 2020 Fall Iowa Youth Straw Poll asked students statewide to cast their vote for their preferred candidates. Election results are tabulated by school, uploaded to the Iowa Secretary of State’s website, and then exported into a spreadsheet with participating schools from across the state.
