Starting in September, the OHS Student Council will present a monthly report to the Ottumwa Board of Education.
The change, initiated by Superintendent Mike McGrory, adds student voice to the regular meeting as well as keeps our community updated on Student Council activities. "I think it's great," said Kelci Eakins, OHS Student Council sponsor. She hopes the community will not only know more about the projects and activities the students do but gain a greater appreciation for how much work is involved behind the scenes. "We have 17- and 18-year-olds running these things," she said. "The students put a lot of heart into what they do."
OHS senior, Joaly Andrade, presented on behalf of the council on Monday, September 28. She shared that the council is responsible for both concession stands at football games this year, planned Spirit Week, and is coordinating the Spirit Week King and Queen contest. They also hold a red and white competition every Friday and are planning to sponsor a blood donation day this fall. The council met throughout the summer, staying connected using Google Hangout.
While nervous, Andrade has advice for future presenters, "It's not as bad as you think," she said. "Be prepared and have fun with it."
