Updates to Start the School Year

front of high school

This school year our office wanted to let you know of some recent changes at OHS to help with COVID-19 mitigation.  We want to do our best to keep our students safe while attending classes throughout the 20-21 school year.

Students will still enter the cafeteria/commons door in the morning, however the building will not open until 7:30.  The students will be dismissed from the cafeteria/commons area at 7:45 to the main building and can proceed to their 1st period class.  This allows students to spread out and social distance in the morning.  Students that wish to eat breakfast can remain in the cafeteria/commons area until finished and then go to 1st period.

This year, students will have a 20-minute lunch time to eat followed by a 10-minute passing time to use the restroom, fill water bottles at the bottle filling station, wash hands, etc.  This will allow the food service staff enough time to sanitize tables and benches, along with a cleaning of the serving area before the next lunch group arrives.  In order to increase social and safe distancing our building went to 4 lunch shifts to make each lunch smaller.  We have marked off each table with tape to allow for 8 students per table only.

Our building also saw a change in student passing times.  In previous years, students had a 4-minute passing time to move to the next class.  This year our building increased passing for students by 2 minutes allowing a total of 6 minutes for students to move between classes.  Students can now have additional time to take alternate routes to class and spread out while passing.  They can wait a few minutes to allow traffic to pass to avoid close contact with other student passing as well.  Students also have more time to use the restroom, wash hands, and use handwashing/sanitizing stations in the hallway.  The 6-minute passing also gives teachers additional time to sanitize desks and work stations between classes.

Our building is hopeful that by adding these additional measures it will help keep our students safe.
