OHS Establishes Device and Book Return Plan

student with Chromebook

Ottumwa High School has put together a plan for students to return their textbooks, library books, and for seniors to turn in their Chromebooks. Both plans include drop off locations in the Second and Fourth Street school parking lots.

OHS seniors may drop off their Chromebooks either Thursday, May 21 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Friday, May 22 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Second and Fourth Street parking lots will be staffed with OHS employees and a truck. Staff will have masks and gloves on. Parking lots will be set up for one-way traffic only. See the diagram for details.

Upon arrival, students or their parents will need to place the district-issued Chromebook and charger inside of the device’s case. As seniors drive through the parking lot, they will place the device case into a large zip-lock bag provided by the District. Please bring a piece of paper with the student’s name and ID number to include with the device in the zip-lock bag. Place the paper on top of the device, facing up. Students/parents will also place their textbooks and library books into a separate zip-lock bag provided by the District.

Textbook and library book drop off dates/times for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be Thursday, May 28 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Friday, May 29 from 1-7 p.m. Seniors unable to drop off their items the previous week may use these times as well. All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who will be attending Ottumwa Schools in the fall can keep their Chromebook devices for the summer. Support will be available at:  https://esupport.ottumwaschools.com/support/home.

As students/parents drive through the parking lot, they will receive a zip-lock bag for their returned items.  Please include a piece of paper with the student’s name and ID number to place in the bag.

After two-weeks, district technology employees will thoroughly inventory, assess damage, and complete repairs to the Chromebooks. Due to COVID-19 and the stress put on families, the district will not be charging for device repair as long as the device is turned-in and does not show signs of intentional damage. After devices are disinfected, they will be set aside for redistribution in the fall.

If the device and accessories, textbooks, and/or library books are not returned, the parent/guardian will be held responsible for the full price of replacement. Devices for seniors must be turned-in prior to the May 24 graduation date.
