Kasey Wainwright - While involved in a variety of activities, including JROTC (Drill, color guard, and staff), soccer, Al-Exito, and Torch Club. JROTC provided her with many opportunities to do things outside her comfort zone. The program allowed her to grow as a person, especially when she had to be in front or in charge of her peers. Overtime, this experience made her more confident.
She plans to attend the University of Iowa on a Pre-Medicine track.
Describe something about your OHS experience that stands out to you - “There is one experience specifically that stands out. My friends and I were at a football game senior year and although I am sure many of my friends had no idea what was going on, we were all screaming our hearts out cheering for Ottumwa. I remember looking around and seeing all the people in our student section. It was the last football game of our high school experience and all of the people that I had known for so many years of my life were there with me. In that moment, I just remember thinking about how much I loved the people around me and how glad I was to have shared with them the amazing experience that was high school.”
What lesson will you take with you? - “To never let fear hold you back from doing what you want to do.”
Biggest accomplishment at OHS - “I have always been sort of a perfectionist and it was really hard for me when I failed at something. This became a fear and I would often stop myself from doing things I wanted to do because of my fear of failure. Throughout high school, I had to learn (many times the hard way) that it was okay to make mistakes, but it was not okay to not try at all just because you're scared.”
Advice to underclassmen - “Enjoy and cherish every moment because those four years really do fly by.”
