The Family and Consumer Science Department at OHS is celebrating National Vocational Educational Month.
For students wanting to work with children, OHS offers many courses that can lead to a rewarding career. Options include:
- Early Childhood Occupations is a block class offered for one semester to students interested in working with children. The main focus is on preschool and elementary education but is also good background for daycare work, pediatric nursing, child psychology and school social work.
- Many students follow-up by taking Children's Literature and Introduction to Education the second semester, which are dual credit courses with Indian Hills.
- Students wanting to teach are encouraged to take Introduction to Education.
There are many teachers working in OCSD or other districts across the state who started their career path by taking one or more of these courses. At a time when there is a shortage of quality day care in Iowa, as well as certified preschool teachers, the possibilities for employment in these areas is unlimited.
