Students from the Human Rights Youth Chapter at Ottumwa High School participated in the national Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. On Thursday,  five students went to Pickwick Early Childhood Center and read books with black characters, knowing how important representation is.One girl, originally from East Africa, read a book that took place in an African village. The mom in the book was completely covered. A child said, “she looks scary.” The student explained how the head wrap and dress were part of their culture and not scary.

High school students also did affirmations with the preschoolers, danced, and played.

Students also set up a display at OHS and had students sign a pledge to embrace diversity.  It was a great way to also kick off Black History Month.
