Human Rights Chapter Recognized

The Ottumwa High School Human Rights Youth Chapter was recognized recently by the state office. Ms. Shameka Brown from the Department of Human Rights office was at OHS to present awards.

The OHS Chapter, the first school-based chapter in the State of Iowa, started one year ago this month. OHS was awarded a "Certificate of Excellence" for "your commitment and dedication to creating awareness and education about Human Rights issues and for promoting an inclusive environment at Ottumwa High School," said Brown. "Your group's leadership in programming is recognized by the State of Iowa and we applaud you for your service excellence." 

Two students, Robert Ponce and Lily Streeby, were recognized as emerging leaders for professionally advocating for the Ottumwa High School Human Rights Youth Chapter; actively participating in meetings and activities with an open mind; and striving to make OHS a safe and welcoming place for all.

Teachers and staff recognized for their support of the Chapter were Mr. Almodovar, Ms. Moffitt, and Mrs.Josolynn Gordon. 

Graduating seniors and those who have went above and beyond were recognized with a Certificate of Achievement.
